Pocahontas County has
a fascinating history, from its days as a
favored hunting ground of Indians, to its role
in the early days of the Civil War, to the
exciting years of the lumber boom. Today, the
county is one of West Virginia’s most visited
tourism destinations, as the mighty mountain
that once teemed with lumbermen now has become
Snowshoe Mountain, one of the premier
four-season resorts in the East, and the old
logging trains and rail beds transport visitors
deep into wilderness that has been reestablished
since the timber era ended.
